Finding your writing style is often one of the biggest challenges for a beginning author. We admire the pens of great writers, we sometimes try to imitate them, then we get lost. However, each author has a unique voice. You just have to learn to listen to it. Here are 5 steps to follow.

1. Read to know yourself better

Before writing, you must read. Read a lot, but above all read carefully. Observe the tone, rhythm, structure of the authors you like: what attracts you? Realism? Humor? Poetry?
By identifying what you value, you begin to understand what defines you as a writer.

2. Write without filter

Don’t look for perfection from the first lines. Let your thoughts express themselves freely, without censoring yourself. It’s often in these spontaneous moments that your true voice emerges.
Keep a writing notebook: recount your emotions, your memories, your daily observations. Over time, a recurring tone and vocabulary will naturally emerge.

3. Experiment with genres

Don’t hesitate to try different styles: story, short story, poetry, essay… It is by exploring that you will discover what suits you. Perhaps you have a sensitive pen for dialogue, or a gift for description.

4. Find the right rhythm

Style doesn’t come overnight. It is built with regularity. Writing a little every day, even 10 minutes, will help you make your sentences more fluid and assert your tone.

5. Accept to evolve

Your style is not fixed. It will grow with you, your experiences and your readings. The important thing is to stay true to how you feel, rather than what you think you should write.

Finding your writing style is like discovering yourself: it takes time, requires patience and above all, courage. So, take up your pen and dare to write as you are.
